Have the Conversation with Someone Who “Has Been There.”
The Center’s Peer Recovery Support Specialists connect help seekers to various community resources, including “no cost treatment,” to support their recovery goals and address any gambling related problems.
Peer recovery support services are delivered by individuals with similar life experiences to the people they are serving. Peer support provides hope, reduces relapse, and promotes sustained recovery.
Recovery is a journey and although life’s circumstances may differ, there is a shared common bond with those who have struggled with addiction. This bond can inspire recovery in those individuals seeking to limit, control or stop their gambling.
Peers are often easier to talk with because they have walked a similar path and provide a variety of support mechanisms:
- Encourages the individual through empathy, concern and caring by helping to strengthen confidence and self-esteem.
- Provides support by sharing knowledge and any available resources to empower individuals to reach their recovery goals.
- Assists people in completing tasks necessary for successful recovery; i.e., transportation, housing, etc.
- Peers help remove barriers and assess a person’s need for resources including treatment, support groups, financial counseling, voluntary exclusion, and more.
- Helps individuals gain a sense of belonging and being with others.
