Tips for Speaking to Someone About a Gambling Problem
If you suspect a friend, parent, or loved one in your life may have a gambling problem follow these steps to have a conversation about it:
- Choose the right time: Pick a time when the person is not busy and the situation is calmer. Ask the person if it is a good time to talk.
- Let the person know you are concerned for them in a caring manner: Make sure your voice tone is calm and empathetic. Use good eye contact.
- Be specific about the behaviors you have seen: Describe specifics about the persons actions and behaviors. Describe the increase you have seen in a specific gambling behavior and the results of that action. State the negative impacts of the action.
- Really listen non-judgmentally to what the person is saying: Let the person respond to your observations. See if the person mentions causes for the behavior you mentioned. See if the person offers solutions to change.
- Let them know you are willing to help – suggest support and counseling: Tell the person you are willing to assist with getting help. 1-800-GAMBLER is a great place to start. Call, text, or chat 24 hours 7 days a week.

Terrell, is it a good time to talk? I have something I want to bring up that I have noticed. I know you have been having trouble with paying your bills since work is not steady.
